Recreation

Tapoco currently offers many recreation opportunities and recreation facilities. Specifically, there are 25 recreation sites at the Project. APGI operates and maintains solely or in cooperation with state and/or federal agencies 21 of these sites, while the others are managed by the U.S. Forest Service, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, North Carolina Department of Transportation, or Tennessee Department of Transportation.

These public recreation sites provide opportunities for boating, fishing, swimming, picnicking, and camping.  In addition to public recreation sites, Santeetlah is the only reservoir that has private and commercial recreation facilities.

At the remaining three reservoirs, Cheoah, Calderwood and Chilhowee, there are no private recreation facilities, no commercial recreation facilities, and no shoreline development. These reservoirs are generally less developed and provide a more primitive recreation experience.

In accordance with the Tapoco License and Relicensing Settlement Agreement, many of these sites will undergo enhancements and facilities upgrades and several new recreation sites will be constructed.  These recreational improvements and facilities upgrades are further detailed in the Tapoco Recreation Plan.
